Hapisk connects Iceland and Shetland in its name and stitches. It is Hélène's Icelandic interpretation of a Shetland hap and is part of "The Book of Haps," edited by Kate Davies and Jen Arnall-Culliford. A hap is a Scottish dialect word for a simple shawl or cape. Haps have a special connection to Shetland, where they were knitted for many decades for both everyday use and sale. Hélène's design is a large garter stitch square shawl with stripes and a typical Icelandic lace border. A central slit gives it a modern, wearable feel, similar to a poncho, and when wrapped around one shoulder, it is reminiscent of the traditional Icelandic striped long shawl.
